Cameron Day University of Chicago, Chicago, IL, USACameron Day is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Chicago. His research examines the histories of institutions of social control with an emphasis on how law intersects with science, politics, ideology, and emotion. In the past, he has researched the spatial concentration of urban public health crises, the application of clinical science to social problems by philanthropic organizations, and professional discourses of data science among social service nonprofits. He is currently completing his dissertation on the emotional politics of legislation that responds to intense media coverage and public outrage following sensational incidents of violence. His next project will investigate the history, politics, and practice of alternative justice institutions, such as restorative justice courts.
