The Co-Construction of Non-Normative Identities: What Stigma, Labeling, and Othering Theory Have Underemphasized
Elisabeth Theresa Sandler University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UKElisabeth Theresa Sandler is a qualitative researcher and sociologist speciaizing in identity studies, deviance theory, and qualitative methodology. She recently completed her PhD in Sociology at the University of Cambridge (2019-2024), where her research focused on how university members navigate their LGBTQA+ identities within higher education settings. She is the author of An overview of coming out research: Introducing a three-lens typology (Sociology Compass, 2022) and contributed to the Out at Cambridge (2019) study, examining LGBTQA+ disclosure in higher education. Dr. Sandler has taught at the universities of Cambridge, Innsbruck, Hamburg, Salzburg, and Graz, with expertise in creative interview methods for gender, sexuality, and LGBTQA+ research. She is currently developing her first book, The Diary-Interview Method: A Practical Guide for Qualitative and Mixed-Methods Researchers (Barbara Budrich, forthcoming).
