University public safety officers’ perceptions of personal and departmental implementation of restorative justice principles

McDowell Department of Political Science, Criminal Justice, and International Studies, Georgia Gwinnett College, Lawrenceville, GA, USALana McDowell is a Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Dr. McDowell’s teaching interests focus in the areas of ethics, criminology, and restorative justice. She has served as an executive counselor and board member of the Restorative and Community Justice Section of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS), a professional organization, and her scholarship agenda has primarily focused on aspects of restorative justice. In the service realm, Dr. McDowell has facilitated restorative and conflict resolution workshops as in-service training with county level police department supervisors, individuals serving life and life without parole sentences at a Georgia prison, and with juveniles serving probationary terms within the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice. In academia, she has coordinated restorative training sessions for campus residential directors, advisors, and residential assistants as well as university public safety officers at a previous institution prior to joining Georgia Gwinnett College. At GGC, Dr. McDowell enjoys collaborating with the School of Student Success and has facilitated first generation and transfer student talking circles.
