“It Was A Humbling Experience”: Service Learning in A Criminal Justice Research Methods Course and Student Perceptions of the Judicial System, Research, and Careers

Fei Yang Clete Snell Katherine Shoemaker a Department of Criminal Justice and Social Work, University of Houston – Downtown, Houston, TX, USAb Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Houston – Downtown, Houston, TX, USAFei Yang, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Houston – Downtown (UHD). Her research focuses on the institution and practices of law enforcement, policing innovations and technologies, policies and reforms, and civilian oversight of the criminal justice system. Dr. Yang is the Director of the Houston Laboratory for Crime and Justice, a research lab at UHD. The lab co-created and spearheaded the Houston Court Watch Program in partnership with the Harris County Public Defender’s Office. She consistently teaches criminal justice research methods as designated service-learning courses and involves her students in the Houston Court Watch program.Clete Snell, Ph.D., is a Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Houston – Downtown. His research focuses on problem-solving courts, special offender populations, mentally ill offenders, and criminal justice education. Dr. Snell has published articles on criminal justice education, including service learning. Dr. Snell has 15 years of experience in conducting program evaluations of criminal courts.Katherine Shoemaker, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Statistics at the University of Houston – Downtown. Her research addresses the creation of new features to add to the radiomic feature space and building interpretable models for classification that take the reliability and robustness of the features into account. She also is passionate about effectively summarizing and communicating complicated aspects of large datasets. With 8 years of experience in analysis in industry, healthcare, and educational settings, Dr. Shoemaker’s work centers on finding the stories present in different types of data and communicating them as effectively as possible.
