McLoughlin is a Reader in Politics at Queen’s University Belfast and an Associate Fellow at the Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice. He was a visiting Fulbright Scholar at Boston College in 2019, examining the role of the US government and Irish-America in both the Northern Ireland conflict and peace process. His work also addresses other international dimensions of the Northern Ireland problem, such as the EU influence. He has published widely, with articles appearing in journals such as Diplomatic History, Nationalism and Ethnic Politics, Irish Political Studies, and Twentieth Century British History. He is also author of a book on the Northern Ireland leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner, John Hume – John Hume and the Revision of Irish Nationalism (MUP: 2010). He was formerly joint-editor of the Irish Political Studies journal.
