Sloan III is professor emeritus of criminal justice at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Since 2020 he has been Co-Principal Investigator with Bonnie S. Fisher of the ACJS Directory of Justice-Related Degree Programs project (https://acjsdirectory.org/). His primary research interests include crime and related issues on college campuses; policing; criminal justice policy; undergraduate education; and professional ethics. His work has been funded by, among others, the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Justice, the COPS Office, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance. His work has appeared in such journals as Criminology, Justice Quarterly, Criminology & Public Policy, Journal of Criminal Justice, Social Forces, and the Journal of Criminal Justice Education. He is also author or coauthor of 9 books, including Criminal Justice Ethics: A Framework for Analysis (Oxford University Press) and most recently Cops on Campus: Rethinking Safety and Confronting Police Violence (University of Washington Press). He earned a Ph.D. in sociology from Purdue University.
